Say Hello to the WordPress Block Editor
On June 1 we’ll be retiring our older WordPress.com editor and transitioning to the more recent (and more powerful) WordPress block editor.
…and ‘take the WordPress editor for a spin’

What! I like my rectangular screen. Are we going into the fifth dimension? If I am never seen or heard from again, you will know why… or probably not notice I have gone.
I am writing this on a word document, as I usually do with my blogs, then I shall dive into Gutenberg. But first a word about our sponsor from Wikipedia…

It is hard to believe, but there are people in the world who don’t even read blogs, let alone write them, in fact there are many people who have not heard of blogging and if they had, could be forgiven for thinking the panic induced in some of us by the word BLOCK is of no importance compared to world dramas such as a pandemic.
Many of us don’t know how WordPress worked in the first place, presumably by magic. As no one else in my house or family uses WordPress I must have got here all by myself.
And here I am in a block? I have added colour… shall I try putting in a picture of no relevance?
Okay, so I had better try publishing this before I start going round and round…. see you on Friday hopefully…

I don’t like changes, especially since my grasp on technology is so tenuous. If I soon disappear from blogdom, it will be only because I couldn’t keep up:)

A great job, Janet. I love the new editor, so neat and tidy in the blocks and so easy to get the sizing of photographs correct. It provides for a description to the photograph. I think it is great.

The Classic editor is supposed to be around until 2022, so I don’t have to monkey with the block editor until then. I gave it several months to impress me, and well, it didn’t. Maybe by the time I have to use it they’ll have gotten it right, though I’m not holding my breath. I have tried writing in BBEdit using Markdown, converting to standard HTML, and pasting it into a Classic block, and that seems to have worked all right, so maybe that’s my workaround…

I was vaguely thinking about doing a trial run before June 01 but a bit of him (the head in the sand bit) hopes it might all pass me by and leave me alone.

Nice to see it simplified beyond all the noise. My take is that it’s for people who use multiple photo inserts, aren’t that interested in graphics editing and want to get it out there. WP has always offered photo scaling, but no effects, and for photo inserts word wrap was pretty dodgy. I think with the blocks you can stage that easier. But I use a header and forego picture inserts. I can see it as a godsend to the travel and recipe types.
