It is such a waste when trees are chipped but I understand that the work of processing them into firewood and selling it is not cost effective. Sometimes Councils are very cautious and risk averse so fell perfectly safe trees ‘just in case’.
I’m not exactly sure what happened to the main parts of the trunk, but my neighbour tells me our hairdresser was very upset as the tree was right by her home – leaning away from it so wouldn’t have fallen on her home!
The Oak tree in our back garden almost covers the house, and is estimated to be 300 years old. (The one at the front on our driveway is over 200 years old) Luckily, it does not appear to be in any danger of falling on us anytime soon. I would be very sad if it had to be cut down.
Best wishes, Pete.
I hate seeing perfectly good trees end up in the wood chipper.

Yes Liz, it was a sad day. that tree had been leaning over for the nineteen years I’ve lived here and presumably before that.

You are lucky Pete, to have two great oaks. We had a big ash tree that had to be felled as it had dieback.
