Live coverage from my house, all you need to know about the general election.

Who were the other candidates? How boring would elections be if we didn’t have those from minority parties willing to stand… Nick the Incredible Flying Brick, The Official Monster Raving Loony Party, 162 votes and the other strong contender Bobby “Elmo” Smith, Independent, 19 votes.

Other candidates had fun along the campaign trail…

But a more traditionally dressed chap is going to be the new Prime Minister.

Elections are strange things. The only certainty being that new governments rarely keep all their election promises. Hopefully a good outcome, but there were people who got in that we certainly don’t want and some MPS who did not deserve to lose their seats, let down by others in their party. If results were analysed how would you measure success if you were elected?. How many people actually turned up to vote and how many voted for you in desperation to keep someone else out?

Nick the Incredible Flying Brick? How did I miss him? I’m off to look him up. My life will be so much richer.

It certainly will Ellen and I’m sure he would have made a great MP.

Sadly, I usually vote against someone, rather than for the candidate I choose on the ballot.

I would rather stick a hot poker in my eye than run for elected office.

I heartily agree Liz, maybe that is why it is hard to find good characters for leadership.

I love the Monster Raving Loonies.
It’s a shame Screaming Lord Sutch is no longer with us. He set up the Official Monster Raving Loony Party in 1983 to mock UK politics and at least provide a choice for protest voters in ‘safe’ seats, where the mainstream candidate was unlikely to be toppled.
A fine method of political protest!

It does…
This is an interesting article about the far right voters in France. There are some parallels with the UK, not least that they’ve never been in power so they can promise anything and have never disappointed anyone, because they’ve never been called to step up to the plate! https://www.thelocal.fr/20240703/analysis-who-are-frances-10-million-far-right-voters/?tpcc=news_open

Thanks Jacqueline, yes how easy it is to make promises. Having a quick look at that article, definitely parallels.

The highlight of the night for me was the amazing hat being worn by the acting High Sheriff of Northumberland. That lady has style!

We Americans used to laugh at British politics with their undignified disputes…but now I fear we are the laughing stock. “He who laughs last…”

Yes Jill, it makes us very proud of our democracy and I’m looking forward to the day when one of them actually wins.

Count Binface was my favourite, and I was sorry he didn’t manage to unseat Sunak in Yorkshire. That would have made my year! Best wishes, Pete.

Thanks for the link Pete, despite staying up till 3am I was sorry to miss Count Binface, but at least I saw Elmo. These candidates are the best part of election night.

It’s been a while since your labour party held power. I can’t help wondering if they were around, would there have been a Brexit? 🙂

Yes so do I , though I seem to recall at the time that none of our parties were giving a clear message.
