Hop off the bus and walk up to the West Cliff.

Stop to catch your breath and admire the view.

Onwards and upwards

Highcliff Hotel, popular with politicians attending party conferences.

Not another mermaid tail!

Time to go down to the beach.

Take the cliff lift…

…or perhaps not…

Follow in the footsteps of our leaders as they walk from their hotel to the Bournemouth International Centre.

Look for another mermaid tail.

This is your clue where to see the gathering of all the mermaid tails before they are auctioned off.

So pretty in the sunshine..Love the mermaids tales…although we have some stunning beaches here I do love the British seaside …I have lots of fond memories of holidays and days out when in the UK its lovely to see the beaches being well kept as well …Thank you for the tour, Janet x

The Cliff Lift is a surprise to me. I can see that it would be taken out of service after the landslide, but I wonder why it was installed in the first place.
Climbing all those steps would be good exercise!

Hello Audrey, in 1908 I expect Bournemouth was still a popular destination for invalids coming to convalesce and cliff lifts are still very handy for the disabled. Now we only have one cliff lift working.

That makes sense; didn’t realize they had been there so long.

An interesting idea to auction those tails. Where will the proceeds go?

They will all go to Julia’s House Children’s hospice, whose project it is. They support families and siblings of children with life limiting conditions and take the sick children in for respite care and fun.

Love the mermaid tails, don’t like the sound of cliff slips!

Hello Liz. Locals have seen plenty of homes slip down the cliff, you can see remnants of gardens! It happens all round the coast of Britain. One day my house might have a sea view. They monitor the cliff all the time with sensors.

That kind of cliff erosion is happening in California and Cape Cod over here.

Its just geology. Our beaches have to be replenished with sand dredged out in the bay, because the natural process of cliffs crumbling and making more sand was interrupted as soon as promenades and man made structures were built!

Fighting natural geography does seem to be a bit of a fool’s errand.

Landslip seems like such a pleasant word to describe a landslide disaster. I like it.

Yes Geoff, such a gentle word to describe the whole of the British Isles becoming smaller and smaller!

The English seaside on a lovely day. Nothing better! Shame about the Cliff Lift though, that’s a lot of steps!
Best wishes, Pete.

Hello Pete, yes we have only one cliff lift left working out of three, the one near me. I don’t know whether steps or endless zig zags are worse, coming from flat Middlesex it took getting used to.

I haven’t heard of a cliff lift before. Maybe essential for politicians returning to their hotel late at night very tired of very drunk?

Yes they will be disappointed it’s not working!
