Naycation

For the next three weeks I am watering next door’s garden while the family are on the other side of the Atlantic. A simple task with their designer minimalist garden, very different from mine, which I’m happy to do as Mr. Immaculate Gardener is always fixing things for me, painting my fences etc. But there was a security routine to go through since various incidents have been picked up by their multiple far reaching CCTVs . To save tramping through the house and switching the burglar alarm on and off, I just had to remember the number for the new combination lock on the side gates… and be shown burglar alarm procedure in the very unlikely event the alarm goes off accidentally.

  1. What an interesting naycation life you lead. I live in a lakeside town in Canada, on Lake Huron. I look after my neighbours house in Winter when he goes to Portugal for four months, mostly consisting of clearing snow from his driveway and car and starting his car up periodically so the battery doesn’t die in the freezing cold, also tour the inside of his house once a week to adjust the heat if it gets to minus 20 to ensure the plumbing doesn’t freeze.

  2. I love this…it’s always nice to help friends and neighbors who are out of town for any reason, but there is also a bit of jealousy and a hope that you will be gifted with more than a T-Shirt with their destination’s logo on it!

  3. The only time I have been given the keys to someone else’s castle was my mother’s residence when she was out of town and I had to procure her mail, take out trash and recycling bins and safely return them, make sure the power was on, etc. No security system or pets as possible constraints to success, so the ten days involved were seamless. My wife was once charged with checking on her co-worker’s residence and a cat was part of that checklist. Fortunately, the feline was happy to see us…perhaps because food was involved. After doing all of these tasks and duties, a vacation was definitely in order for you!

    1. I think I got off lightly compared with friends’ experiences like son’s cats that need injections three times a day or the neighbour’s cat that prefers my friend’s house and keeps coming to annoy her and the dog or worse sneaking in and giving them a fright.

  4. I had never heard of the word nacation before, and wasn’t sure if it was a made up word or real. Here’s what I found: A nacation (or nakation) is a portmanteau of the words naked and vacation, defining an informal term for a nudist or clothing-optional trip. I suspect your neighbor is not expecting you to fulfill this part of the arrangement. 🤣

One good thing about this arrangement is that they owe you when you go away.

    1. Hello Pete. I thought I had made it up and nearly called it Nocation, but thought it better to rhyme with Staycation and Traication. I don’t think I’ll be going on a real Nacation, though I might write a blog about the time we went to our local nudist beach…

  5. I have quite an ‘easy one’ coming up in October. Just minding their excitable puppy 4 days a week for 2 weeks. But only between 9 and 4, as my neighbour’s sister is staying in the house and she works 4 days a week from 9-4. I will have to take him for a walk and give him his lunch, while hoping that he doesn’t chew up anything while he is in our house.

    Best wishes, Pete.
