A nice place to have coffee after your voyage.

Only employees of John Lewis and Waitrose can stay in the castle.

No cars, no dogs…

…but plenty of bracken.

The Boy Scout movement started here.

No stroll is complete without danger!

Look across to the Isle of Purbeck, Enid Blyton’s favourite holiday place and inspiration for her children’s adventure books.

Can you get down to the beach?

Where are you? Answer coming up soon.

South Shore Lodge. You can stay here in basic bunk-bed accommodation.

Where did you catch the ferry?
Have you been to Brownsea Island, if so have you actually stayed here?

my mum (who was an employee of John Lewis) stayed there, the week. I’ve been to the island but not the castle.

Lucky Mum! Did she enjoy her stay?

They loved it. It was before I lived down here, so at the time it didn’t really mean anything to me. But yes, what a place to wake up!

My partner and I had a holiday in Dorset in 2009. We visited Brownsea Island among other places while we were there. A few photos of that trip are on Google Photos. (https://photos.app.goo.gl/VedGVHKN3VLSHQm97)

Yes been to some of those places, Dorset has a variety for sure. We took a boat trip close up to The Needles.

Never been, it looks bucolic and serene..I’d love it! Great photos and tour!

Yes, the best part is no cars allowed and only a twenty minute ferry ride from busy Poole. The last ferry back is five pm so it must be very quiet when all the visitors have left.

New to me as a Yank! It looks like a beautiful place.

Yes just a tiny little place, I’m sure you have bigger islands with bears probably! This island is famous for being a stronghold for the beleaguered red squirrels.

The islands in New Hampshire and Vermont are in lakes, so I think they’re too small to support a bear population. Plenty of bear sightings in other places in the states, though, including my neighborhood.

We would have bears if our ancestors had not driven them to extinction!

Coincidentally, the news this morning featured a LOT of video footage of bears in our area chowing down in people’s backyards.

I’ve never heard of this island, or the other one you mentioned. Ignorance strikes again. I did read quite a few of Enid Blyton’s books as a kid, though. Looks like a fun expedition!

Nor had I Audrey till we moved down this way. My Canadian geography is very limited.

I admit I’m not familiar with the details of our Atlantic provinces, and hazy on the secondary cities in the UK.

Years ago we had a Canadian girl at work ( her husband worked for the Canadian embassy ) and there were two things that astounded her – nobody had snow chains for their cars and nobody had heard of the city she came from!

I wonder what city that might have been. And tire chains aren’t needed here in Victoria, except for trips into the mountains or winter road trips to distant places.

England is very pretty in the summer. I didn’t know this about Enid Blyton.

Nor did I till we moved down this way. The Isle of Purbeck is so lovely, like going to another country when you cross over on the chain ferry.

Another place I’d like to visit. I loved Enid buttons books.

Tee hee – the John Lewis bit nailed the location for me.
I can’t believe I’ve lived in this neck of the woods since 2007 and have still never been to Brownsea 🙂

Hello Jaqueline, I assumed you would guess. Not being allowed to take dogs might hamper a visit to the island!

Absolutely. If the dogs can’t go, we don’t go 🙂

I guess the red squirrels are happy with the ban! I don’t think your four would get away with being assistance dogs.

How fascinating! I’ve never been there but it looks amazing. I’m quite intrigued by that fact about the John Lewis/Waitrose staff!

Hello Joanne, it is rather unique. Apparently, according to the ferry captain, John Lewis has a 99 year lease out on the hotel.

I have never been to Brownsea Island, despite being in the area on many occasions. Now I know I should have gone.
Best wishes, Pete.

A bit far for you to go now Pete! There are lots of our islands I haven’t visited yet. I see the Isle of Wight most days, except when it’s misty, but don’t seem to have gone there very often.

I have never been there (IOW) either, but my wife has, quite a few times before I knew her.
