Who is this lady and what is she looking at?

The landmark you can see for miles around.
‘Arlington House is an 18-storey residential apartment and commercial block in the Brutalist style on the seafront of Margate, Kent, England, next to Margate railway station and Dreamland Margate. It was developed by Bernard Sunley and designed by Russel Diplock, and is known for every apartment having a sea view.’
T S Eliot wrote The Wasteland while sitting in the Nayland Rock Shelter

The soldier nearby is pointing north across the Thames Estuary.
The Lady is Mrs Booth, JW Turner’s landlady.

When I saw the picture of the lady made of shells, I thought, “Well, I don’t know who she is, but I bet she sells seashells on the sea shore”. It’s funny how the mind works, isn’t it?

I recognize the man emerging from the water, but I can’t remember what he’s called. The Brutalist style has a very Soviet vibe to it.

‘Another Time’ and another time is when you will find out more Liz.
Yes rather Soviet, I would love them to paint it in bright colours. It has had a mixed history

Fascinating! It all looks so deserted, cold and dreamlike–yet beautiful!

Thanks Lori, it was very windy and most people were at school or work.

I was hoping the soldier was pointing toward the restrooms because I can no longer make it through a long walk without them.

Thanks Carol, my parents took me to Broadstairs two years running when there was just me. The next holiday a few years later with three children and their friends was Leysdown on the Isle of Sheppey.

I recognised most of it from trips to Margate in the past. But not the modern building, which might not have been there when I last visited. (That was in 2000 I think)
Best wishes, Pete.

Hello Pete, no it would not have been, find out more next time. When our eldest was a toddler we went to Margate on an Away-A-Day train trip. Leaving London it was sunny but by the time we got to Kent, fog descended and the fog did not lift, so we had no idea what Margate looked like until our daughter and son-in-law decided to move there in 2015.

What a perfect day for a walk, you had the beach all to yourself, great for thinking and clearing the head…I wouldn’t have dared to go more than a few metres out though, the tide can come in fast 🌊
